About this system volume calculator
This free system volume and water content calculator estimates the total amount of water (in litres) held in a wet central-heating or chilled-water system. It adds the internal volume of every pipe run to the water content of the emitters and the plant, giving the figure you need to size an expansion vessel and to work out the correct corrosion inhibitor dose. It is aimed at UK building-services engineers, heating designers and installers working at tender or commissioning stage.
How the system volume is calculated
Pipework volume is the sum of each tier’s cylinder volume, V = (π/4) · d² · L, where d is the internal bore for the selected material and L is the run length. Internal bores are taken from BS EN 1057 (copper, R250), BS EN 10255 Medium series (steel) and a representative PEX-AL-PEX set for multilayer composite. To this the calculator adds emitter content (number of radiators × average litres each) and plant content (boiler, cylinder or buffer, and any headers or manifolds), following the standard hydronic system-volume method used for expansion and dosing sizing (e.g. the CIBSE Domestic Heating Design Guide). The recommended inhibitor dose divides the total by the treated-volume-per-dose rate. Sentinel X100, for example, treats 100 litres of system water per litre.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I need the system water volume?
The total water content sets the minimum expansion-vessel size and the volume of inhibitor or antifreeze required. Under-sizing the vessel risks the pressure-relief valve lifting; under-dosing inhibitor leaves the system prone to corrosion and sludge.
Which pipe sizes does it cover?
Six tiers from DN15 to DN50, copper 15 to 54 mm OD, steel 15 to 50 NB, and 16 to 50 mm MLCP, each using the published internal bore for that material so the volume per metre is correct.
How accurate is the result?
It is an indicative tender-stage estimate. Pipe bores follow the relevant British/European standards, but emitter and plant contents are nominal defaults, override them with manufacturer water-content data and as-built pipe lengths for a final figure.
