This calculator supports quantity calculation and evidence preparation. It does not replace assessor judgement, product-specific declarations, project specifications or the requirements of the applicable BREEAM manual.
Pipework insulation volume per metre = π·D_ext²/4 − π·D_pipe²/4 (cylindrical annulus). Ductwork volume = perimeter × length × thickness (rectangular: 2·(W+H)·L·t) or π·D·L·t (circular). Waste applied as net × (1 + waste%/100). Embodied carbon = gross weight × material kgCO₂e/kg. Default densities and carbon factors are indicative, replace with project-specific product data / EPDs for BREEAM Mat 01 / Mat 06 submissions.
For design guidance only. Always verify with the applicable BREEAM manual, qualified assessor and product-specific declarations. Attach source take-off files, drawings, revisions, specifications and product data sheets alongside this calculation.

About this BREEAM insulation calculator

This free BREEAM insulation calculator works out the insulation volumes for pipework and ductwork take-offs, then converts them into gross procurement quantities, material weight, waste allowances, indicative embodied carbon and a BREEAM-style evidence summary. It is built for UK building-services engineers, estimators and contractors preparing insulation quantities for a BREEAM assessment, with an audit trail of drawings, revisions and take-off references for assessor review.

How the volumes are calculated

Pipework insulation volume per metre is the cylindrical annulus between the lagged outside diameter and the pipe void, π·Dext²/4 − π·Dpipe²/4, multiplied by run length. Ductwork uses surface area × thickness, either a known area or, in advanced mode, 2·(W+H)·L for rectangular duct or π·D·L for circular. Gross procurement is net × (1 + waste%/100), weight is gross volume × material density, and embodied carbon is gross weight × the material’s kgCO₂e/kg factor. Default densities and carbon factors are indicative; the tool prompts you to replace them with project product data or EPD values for BREEAM Mat 01 / Mat 06 submissions. It supports the BREEAM UK New Construction, Refurbishment and Fit-Out and International schemes, and does not replace assessor judgement or the requirements of the applicable BREEAM manual.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between net and gross volume?

Net is the calculated installed insulation volume from the geometry. Gross applies the per-row waste percentage on top, net × (1 + waste%/100). To give the quantity you actually procure. Material weight and embodied carbon are derived from the gross figure.

Can I use my own material densities and carbon factors?

Yes. The built-in densities and kgCO₂e/kg factors are indicative only. Use the materials tab to enter project-specific product data or EPD values, which is what BREEAM Mat 01 and Mat 06 submissions expect.

Does this replace a BREEAM assessment?

No. It supports quantity calculation and evidence preparation only. It does not replace assessor judgement, product-specific declarations, project specifications or the requirements of the applicable BREEAM manual. Attach your source take-off files, drawings, revisions, specifications and product data sheets alongside the calculation.
